Henry Cavill Wiki/Bio/Age/Family
Cavill
was born on 5 May 1983, the fourth of five boys in a Roman Catholic family in
Saint Helier, Jersey, in the Channel Islands. His mother, Marianne Dalgliesh,
was a secretary in a bank. She was born in Jersey and is of Scottish, English
and Irish heritage. His father, Colin Cavill, was born in Chester, England and was a stockbroker. He was educated at St
Michael's Preparatory School in Saint Saviour, Jersey, before attending Stowe
School in Stowe, Buckinghamshire. In 2000, while playing rugby, 16-year-old
Cavill met actor Russell Crowe, who was shooting on location at Stowe for the
film Proof of Life. The actor shared some acting tips and later sent a package
to his boarding school. The two actors later worked together on Man of Steel.
Career
Henry
Cavill's first film role was in 2001's Laguna. This quickly led to another
booking in The Count of Monte Cristo a year later. The film received solid
reviews from critics and generated over $75 million at the box office. Having
started his career in the United Kingdom, Cavill naturally gravitated towards
roles in British television series such as The Inspector Lynley Mysteries.
Cavill
continued to build his career in the UK over the next few years, appearing in
movies like Goodbye, Mr. Chips and I Capture the Castle. He also appeared in
more British television series like Midsomer Murders. From 2005 onwards, he
started to branch out and appear in American films such as Hellraiser:
Hellworld, Red Riding Hood, Tristan & Isolde, and Stardust.
A
major breakthrough for Cavill came in 2007 when he booked a recurring role on
Showtimes historical drama series The Tudors. Cavill himself recognized the
beneficial effect this show had on his career, and he spoke about his increased
star power after he left the Emmy-winning show in 2010 – especially in regards
to American audiences.
During
this period, Cavill came incredibly close to booking some seriously major
roles. He narrowly missed out on playing Superman in 2006, but the role went to
Brandon Routh instead. He also lost two roles to Robert Pattinson: Cedric
Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Edward Cullen in Twilight.
In 2005, he also barely missed out on playing James Bond in Casino Royale, as
the producers and director had narrowed down the choices to just him and Daniel
Craig.
However,
Cavill went on to appear in a range of movies, including Blood Creek, Whatever
Works, Immortals, and The Cold Light of Day. In 2011, it was announced that
Henry Cavill would take on the role of Superman in Man of Steel. This became
perhaps the most noteworthy role of his entire career, and he appeared as
Superman in various sequels and spin-offs, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of
Justice and Justice League. Although Man of Steel received lackluster reviews,
it grossed a solid $668 million at the box office.
Henry
Cavill also appeared in 2018's Mission: Impossible – Fallout. He then booked a
starring role in the film Night Hunter before taking on the role of Geralt in
Netflix's The Witcher, which is an adaptation of a video game of the same name.
Public image
Cavill
was listed as one of GQ's 50 best-dressed British men in 2012. In December
2013, he was named "World's Sexiest Man" by British Glamour magazine.
The same year, Empire magazine placed him third on their list of "The 100
Sexiest Movie Stars 2013".
In
early 2008, Cavill became the face of the British fragrance Dunhill. He
appeared in two television commercials for the brand.
Personal life
Cavill
is described as British and English. He
was born in the Crown Dependency of Jersey, an island in the Channel Islands.
Cavill resides in South Kensington, London. He was engaged to English show jumper Ellen
Whitaker from 2011 until 2012.
In
2016, Cavill started practising Brazilian jiu-jitsu, having been seen training
at Roger Gracie's academy in London. Cavill supports the Jersey Rugby Club.
He
has been an avid gamer since childhood, at one point missing a phone call from
Zack Snyder telling him he got the role of Superman because he was too busy
playing World of Warcraft. He prefers PC gaming over consoles[why?] and has
been building and maintaining his own gaming computer. He credited his
experience playing The Witcher video game series before the show was in
production as his motivation to seek out the role of Geralt. He has also named
the Total War series of strategy games to be among his favourites, and in May 2020 it was announced that a new
character paying tribute to Cavill and his Witcher character Geralt would be
added to Total War: Warhammer 2 via DLC; Cavill, Loremaster of Hoeth. Cavill
also enjoys the Warhammer 40,000 series of games and fiction, saying he
"genuinely can't get enough of the lore they have built over the
decades".
Cavill
is a spokesman for the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, and an ambassador
for The Royal Marines Charity. He
launched the running phase of the Royal Marines 1664 Challenge and took part in
The Gibraltar Rock Run 2014.
